Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
